MS Dixie to provide free cruise and Earth Day activities to local school children
Zephyr Cove, Nev. – (April 3, 2009) –Lake Tahoe Cruises & Zephyr Cove Resort, managed by ARAMARK Parks and Destinations, has invited 4th graders and their teachers from all public and private schools in South Lake Tahoe to celebrate Earth Day, April 22, 2009 cruising aboard the MS Dixie. More than 300 children from South Lake Tahoe, and Zephyr Cove Elementary school in Lake Tahoe will board the MS Dixie for a day of education and fun on the lake.
A special 2-hour cruise to Emerald Bay will depart from Zephyr Cove Resort at 10 a.m. and featuring learning activities with Forest Service Rangers, the Fire District, boat captains and more. Activity stations will include:
- Tree costume which demonstrates the life of a tree and how it grows
- Educational stations on local wildlife
- Geology station
- Water conservation and clarity station
- Firefighters from the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District on board to teach about forest fire prevention and safety
- Captain’s presentation on how the boat works
“Our Earth Day cruise is intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth’s environment in our local youth. It’s an opportunity for us to celebrate all that nature has given us and to also educate future generations,” said Jamie Hodgson, district manager for ARAMARK Lake Tahoe Operations. “At ARAMARK, we have a deep respect for and commitment to protecting and improving the environment and we want to give area youth a unique opportunity to experience the lake, learn about its features, what we can all do to preserve lake clarity, and have fun!”
Hodgson said that many local families do not normally have the opportunity to go out on the lake. “We want to give them a special day to appreciate their natural surroundings and celebrate Earth Day.”
